Hi. I’m Dr. Ryan Johnson from Integrated Chiropractic and today we’re going to be talking about your first visit and your follow-up visit. The first visit, what we’re going to be doing is your consultation, your exam and a complete review of your history and we’re going to look at your chief complaint and that’s the reason you usually came into the office. So if you have herniated discs, if you’re having headaches or sciatica, we want to look at the history of how that happened, what caused that and so we’re going to see was there any recent trauma, like a car accident. Was there a sports injury? Then from there, we’re going to look at your history to see any other previous accidents or surgeries. From there, we will schedule you for your next appointment and that’s going to be called your treatment plan, your report of findings and it’s going to go over how we’re going to treat you. When I go over everything we can do in the office, we’re going to go over your diagnosis codes, what adjustments are correct for you. On the back, we’re going to go over your specific treatment goals, how long it’s going to take, some homecare recommendations, what you could do at home to treat your condition and then we’re going to go over any other referrals, so if you need an X-ray, an MRI, possibly bloodwork or if you need to see another provider depending on your diagnosis. We’re also going to be going over some education. So I like to teach patients about the vertebral subluxation and the nerve chart and how the different misalignments of the spine correspond to different areas of the body. So a lot of patients will come in for mid back pain and what they find out is after several adjustments they no longer have heartburn or GERD or reflux at night and that’s because the areas that I’m typically adjusting go to the areas of the stomach. They say, “Hey, I’m not having to take TUMS. I’m not belching. I don’t have that acidic taste in my throat anymore,” because when I explained it, it’s like we’re turning the power on to that nerve and we’re reintegrating the stomach to have more acid production naturally. So also we talk about the autonomic nervous system and the easy way to think about this is all the automatic functions that you do without thinking. So for example your heart rate, your breathing, your digestion. You don’t have to actually tell your body to do those things. It does it automatically. We have a saying in chiropractic called “above-down-inside-out” and what that means above in the brain, down the spinal column, inside the spine, out to every organ, cell and tissue. So again a great chart that we like to educate our patients with and then lastly we go over the three types of care. So within chiropractic, I always explain to most patients, you know, you’re coming in for some obvious symptom. So neck herniation or a low back sciatica, headache, something like that. But the goal of true chiropractic is to be optimum function for maintenance, wellness and prevention. So I like to educate the patients along this road here, the initial intensive care to get out of pain. We want to decrease inflammation, swelling and then we get to corrective care. So corrective care, that’s going to be getting your body to hold the adjustments. We want to align the body to have the proper alignment when you’re sitting, when you’re exercising, when you’re sleeping. Then from there, we get to more elective or wellness care. So much like you tune up your car, we want to tune up your body and keep your body healthy and safe for as long as possible.
