Hey there. It’s Dr. Ryan Johnson from Integrated Chiropractic and today I’m going to be talking about chiropractic care in patients with scoliosis. Scoliosis is a term for a lateral curvature of the spine. You could see here in the model. This would be a severe scoliosis. Now scoliosis can affect the neck and it can affect the mid back or the low back and you can see when it puts that curvature in the spine, it can cause the hips, the SI joints to be out of alignment. It can cause undue pressure on the discs and on the nerves and specifically on the muscles. So typically you will have a side of really tight, compressed muscles and then the other side will be more stretched and that’s going to be due to this curve. Now when it comes to chiropractic treatments, we want to make sure we’re treating the right side. We want to make that curvature less if possible. So we don’t want to aggravate it and push into the wrong side, making the curve worse. We want to try and correct it this way. Now there are chiropractic techniques that specialize in spinal correction and stabilization. These can take a long time depending on how long you’ve had scoliosis, when it was developed and how it came about. But we do have specialized tables and different kinds of treatments to position your body in the correct way. So for instance, if the curvature is this way, we want to help realign the pelvis this way and adjust the spine back into a neutral position. So if you or your family have questions about scoliosis, please give our office a call at 941-487-0266 and we will make sure to do a detailed, thorough examination and that will include visualization, examination and palpation and also if needed, X-rays and again we can check the neck, the mid and the low back to make sure you don’t have any severe scoliosis or spinal curves.
